Use this handy guide to the top ten acne treatments to help you decide which treatments suit your skin type and break out issues.

One: See A Doctor

If your acne is severe or tends to scar as it heals, over the counter and home remedies probably won’t help you. Your best treatment option is to see a dermatologist and receive a prescription acne medication. There are many topical and oral medications on the market that can effectively treat acne, but they should always be used under the direct care of a physician.

Two: Lasers

If you have suffered from acne for a long time, chances are you have scarring issues. Laser treatments have proven an effective means of removing acne scars and even helping to clear up existing acne. The process is a bit expensive, but most patients feel that the treatment is well worth the cost. Talk to your doctor if you are interested in having a laser procedure.

Three: Chemical Peels

Plastic surgeons have found that by doing a simple procedure called a chemical peel, they can remove blemishes off the surface of the skin. This procedure is done on an outpatient basis and has a bonus effect of smoothing down fine lines and wrinkles on the face.

Four: Diet

Doctors agree that for the most part, acne isn’t caused by eating too many greasy foods or consuming too much chocolate. However, if your acne is caused by a hormonal imbalance, such as the acne caused by Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome, it can be treated through diet. By consuming a diet low in carbohydrates, many PCOS sufferers find their hormones are naturally balances, causing their cystic acne to decrease.

Five: Vitamins

Many vitamins contain antioxidants which can help you to stay healthy. They can also help your skin to stay healthy. Vitamin E and Vitamin C are especially good for their bacteria fighting properties.

Six: Water

Water flushes out toxins and impurities from your body and from your skin. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day can go a long way in improving the condition of your skin and helping your win the fight against breakouts.

Seven: Exfoliation

When you exfoliate your skin you slough off the dead skin cells that make your complexion dull. You also open up your pores allowing your face cleanser to penetrate deep below the surface of your skin, where it can do the most good.

Eight: Gentle Cleansing

Always choose soaps and facial cleansers that are gentle to your skin. If a product causes your face to tingle or sting, you should avoid it. Using a product that is too harsh can actually increase breakouts.

Nine: Moisturizer

It is just as important to moisturize your skin as it is to cleanse it. Always end your skin care routine with an oil free moisturizer.

Ten: Benzoyl Peroxide

A small dab of medicated cream is a great way to quickly treat an existing blemish.
