Acne is a skin condition that usually occurs around puberty. There are many causes of acne but the most apparent is the hormonal changes that children go through as their bodies mature into adolescents. Acne commonly occurs on the adolescent’s face but there are also some cases of acne appearing on the chest and on the back of the individual. There are many different ways to lessen the flare ups of acne, one of which is to go on an acne diet.

Cause of Acne

The combination of hormonal shifts and bodily changes that older children go through are among the factors that contribute to acne eruptions. Staying on an acne diet can help to reduce the risk of getting too much acne. The reason why an acne diet should be followed is to prevent the scars of too much acne from marring one’s face. Other causes of acne may include a lack of proper hygiene, improper diet and sometimes a condition which you may have inherited from your line of the family.

What To Avoid

An acne diet must not contain oily, greasy and fatty foods. It is quite easy to see which foods can aggravate an acne problem since oily, greasy and fatty foods are very apparent both to the eyes and the taste buds. Some of the not so apparent oily and fatty foods should be avoided as well. Mayonnaise, eggs and some salad dressings are also included in the foods to avoid in an acne diet. Not all acne diets are acne cure diets. An acne diet will just reduce the amount of foods that can aggravate your case of acne. The diet just acts to lessen the acne.

Some nuts are not as healthy as you may think. These nuts which are full of oil and fats and should be reduced in an acne diet include almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts and pistachio nuts. Other food items to be reduced or excluded from an acne diet are dairy items and sweets which contain a lot of sugar. Sugar has been noted to increase the presence of acne; therefore, an acne diet should not have too much sugar if there is to be some at all.

Sticking to an effective acne diet can drastically reduce the presence of acne although the other factors that cause acne should still be considered to reduce it. Having acne can make one self conscious which is why each individual needs to know how to take care of it.

Of course, this does not explain the countless people who have tried everything from prescription treatments, oral remedies and even over the counter creams who achieved success only with changing their diet. An acne diet does exist and you should examine your own eating habits to see if you need to revamp your menus to clear up those pesky breakouts.

Foods to Steer Clear of

The basic acne diet has some clear cut rules regardless of the person following it or the severity of their skin condition. For instance, the diet will likely state that foods with trans-fats and saturated fats should be eliminated as much as possible because they can stimulate oil production in the skin. Reading food labels is important to your acne diet as it will help you identify the trans-fats in food as well as the saturated fats often found in animal products.

Any food that has been processed or has chemicals (like food dyes or flavors) added is a likely candidate to NOT be on the acne diet. Refined carbohydrates that can be found in sugar, flour and other white and non-white foods should be consumed sparingly. These carbohydrates cause your overall insulin and glucose levels to spike which in turn can affect the formation of acne.

Foods to Incorporate

Your acne diet can have carbohydrates but they should be complex carbohydrates that are found in healthy foods such as whole grains, beans, low-fat dairy and more. These carbohydrates do not spike your glucose and insulin levels, thus reducing your risk of breakouts.

Proteins should be a big part of your acne diet along with fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats and fish. While some foods like fish, nuts and seeds may have fat in them, they contain essential fatty acids which aid in lower cholesterol and lower risk of acne.

The Bottom Line

Any acne diet you find will likely be very similar to others because they all incorporate the same elements such as avoiding sugary sweets, colas and processed junk food. You will also discover that drinking plenty of water – the requisite 8 glasses a day is an acne diet requirement as this wet stuff helps keep your skin and body hydrated and flushes out toxins as well.

Times are changing and more and more scientific studies now point out that a healthy acne diet with the elements described above is a promise to clearer skin. That saying “you are what you eat” is definitely appropriate for describing acne as it is for any other health condition.

An acne diet is incredibly important in helping not only to treat present acne, but to prevent future breakouts too. Whether you have acne already or just want to avoid getting it, it is important that you create and stick by an appropriate acne diet.

It can be difficult to get started on coming up with an acne diet, especially if you have had a hard time eating healthy in the past. It is important that you include a proper amount of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water in your diet.

Protein

Proteins have nutrients that are essential to the building and maintenance of body tissue, including the skin and muscles. Proteins can be found in almost all foods, but there are only a few particular foods that contain complete proteins, meaning that they provide all eight essential amino acids. These foods are fish, meat, eggs, and cheese, as well as all other foods from animal sources.

Fat

Fat is also important, but know that there are both good fats and bad fats. Then there are carbohydrates which are what provide fuel for the body in the form of glucose. Glucose is a sugar and so obviously you want to be careful with the amount of carbohydrates that you are consuming, but your body still needs them to be healthy nonetheless.

Vitamins

Vitamins are almost always good for you, and there are actually 13 vitamins in particular which are considered as being essential to the body. There are also the minerals, which are similar to vitamins in that they are vital to the proper function of the body. You should be consuming foods with minerals such as calcium, potassium and iron if you want to be healthy and keep your skin clean and acne free.

Also to supplement your acne diet you are going to want to include certain acne treatment products, especially if you are already dealing with acne. This could include something as simple as an acne cream to a more serious treatment option, such as microdermabrasion or laser scar removal.

By following a proper acne diet you will be able to deal with acne now and prevent future breakouts. Keeping your skin in good condition is important because it will boost your self esteem and leave you looking and feeling a great deal better. Just make sure that you stick to this diet and make it a concrete part of your life.
